The Difference Between Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) Based Carbon Felt and Viscose Based Carbon Felt

  • Carbon felt is divided into three series, namely polyacrylonitrile-based (PAN) carbon felt, viscose-based carbon felt, and asphalt-based carbon felt. Among them, the most commonly used are polyacrylonitrile-based carbon felt and viscose-based carbon felt. So what is the difference between polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based carbon felt and viscose-based carbon felt? Let me introduce it to you below.
  • Differences in Production Processes PAN-based Carbon Felt Processing Technology
  • • 1. Polymerization: The purified materials are reacted to prepare the spinning solution. After the polymerization is completed, the single and the bubble must be removed.
  • • 2. Spinning: After the filaments are ejected from the spinneret, they must go through the steps of coagulation bath, water washing, hot water stretching, upward stretching, steam drawing, heat setting, etc., and finally become PAN raw fibers.
  • • 3. Needle punching: PAN raw fibers are made into felt bodies through the needle punching process.
  • • 4. Pre-oxidation and carbonization: The felt body is turned into a carbon fiber material with a carbon content greater than 90%. At present, the industrial production operation generally pre-oxidizes the PAN raw fiber through an air oxidation furnace with a temperature gradient of 160℃-300℃, then carbonizes the pre-oxidized fiber at a low temperature of 300-800℃ in high-purity nitrogen, and finally carbonizes it at a high temperature of 1300-1600℃.

Processing Technology of Viscose-based Carbon Felt

  • 1. Carbonization treatment: The dried viscose non-woven fabric enters the carbonization furnace and is heated to 300℃. The heat for carbonization comes from the electric heating wire in the furnace. The temperature rises slowly at first and then quickly, eliminating the volatile non-carbon components in the fiber to form a carbonized fiber with a graphite-like microcrystalline structure.
  • 2. Activation treatment: The carbonized viscose non-woven fabric is in the activation furnace. The heat for activation comes from the electric heating wire in the furnace. It is then heated to about 1400℃ (furnace temperature) for activation. The activated carbon fiber is the phosphorus carbon fiber (the crude product of activated carbon fiber).
  • 3. Through-hole recovery: When the temperature of the phosphorus carbon fiber drops below 200℃, the phosphorus carbon fiber is through-holed with boiler steam.
  • 4. Finished product storage: After the through-hole carbon fiber is naturally cooled, it is packaged and stored.
