Application & Process of RTM
The RTM (Resin Transfer Molding) process is a closed mould system that offers several advantages over open mould processes.
It produces products with smooth surfaces on both sides, little waste, and consistent dimensional stability and quality.
High production rates are possible, and the process is less labor-intensive than open moulding.
Additionally, high fiber content and insert molding are possible, and less trimming is required.
The sequence of the RTM process involves applying release agent to both male and female moulds, laying down the Flow Mat or filament continuous mat, closing the mould, injecting the resin, allowing it to cure, opening the mould, releasing the product, and trimming it.
RTM can be applied to a wide range of products, including car body and components, bus and truck body and components, machine covers, signboards, aerospace and defense equipment parts, trays, helmets, boats, telephone booths, doors, kitchen cabinets, table tops, chairs, and tanks.
When deciding whether to use the RTM process, the size and quantity of the intended product should be considered. The cost of the RTM mould must be distributed among the units produced, so a small quantity of products will result in higher unit costs. Generally, an ideal quantity for the RTM process would be from 100 to 5000 pieces per month.
