Flow Mat: Flexible and Porous Glass Fiber Reinforcement for Complex Shapes

Flow Mat is a sandwich construction of chopped strand yarn or woven roving mat with a core of large diameter unidirectional resin flow fibers(PP mat) that can be easily stretched around the mold shape to eliminate pre-forming.

Flow Mat, where the large-diameter fibers of the non-woven core(PP resin flow layer) are sandwiched between CSM, without chemical adhesives or woven mats, and the overall structure is a sandwich. It is especially suitable for RTM and vacuum forming.

We choose to use Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) when higher volumes, internal finishes, and/or part thicknesses are required. An excellent benefit of this process is the “Grade A” finish on both surfaces.

The tooling involved in this process is more costly due to the need for heavy structured tooling to withstand the hydraulic pressure when the male and female molds are closed. However, the price of FRP products will drop because it is less labor-intensive and less automated.

Process – Fiberglass mat pre-cut patterns are placed in the female tool. The male tool is hydraulically forced into the female tool. Through pressure the resin flows through the part. When the resin cures the male tool is removed and the part is taken out.

Flow Mat (from Dymriton) is a flexible glass fiber-reinforced material for complex shapes that provides a regular intensity distribution (nearly equal value in all directions) over the entire surface. The reinforcement is porous and wet-out quickly and thoroughly.

Another focus of development is fiber-directed preforms, where new glass fiber reinforcements have been designed specifically for liquid composite moulding applications such as resin transfer moulding with thermoset polyesters. A new E-glass roving gives fast wet-out with polyester,  vinyl ester, and epoxy. phenolic, urethane and furan resin systems, due to low sizing content. Low loss on ignition means that there is not an excessive amount of sizing to be broken down by the styrene in the resin.

Closed mold processes (RTM, L-RTM, Infusion Vacuum) offer a simple and efficient way to manufacture laminates with high glass content and good mechanical properties. Closed mold process technology provides good reproducibility and a reliable method to efficiently manufacture parts that require high dimensional accuracy and complex structures.
