Explore the Wide Range of Applications for Pultruded Fiberglass
The pultrusion method involves forming products with different shapes by pulling prepregs (prepreg material) through a mold.
Pultrusion (from English “pultrusion” – a method of producing uniaxially oriented plastics) is a high-strength method used to produce fiberglass, also known as “broaching”. It is based on drawing a bundle of glass fibers pre-impregnated with a polymer composition through a heated mold with a given profile. In it, the formation and curing of the glass fiber profile takes place. At the exit of the mould, a finished material is obtained which has the cross-section specified by the mould, and the stable properties of length and cross-section. The cutting unit installed behind the mold can cut products of any length with high precision, and the specified length is only determined by the customer’s transportation capacity, which can reach tens of meters. Pultrusion technology makes it possible to obtain any straight product of constant cross-section.
Finished fiberglass is a multi-component material whose production process is quite complex. When obtaining glass fibers by pultrusion, maximum synchronization of all technical operations is required, otherwise the production of profiles becomes impossible. The finished glass fibers have good physical, mechanical and dielectric properties.
Characteristics of pultruded glass fiber:
Resistance to atmospheric influences, UV radiation and water environments.
High corrosion resistance and biological resistance.
Unique Chemical Resistance.
Compared with wood, the smoke emitted during combustion is less toxic.
Wide operating temperature range – from -60 °С to +80 °С);
Radio transparency.
Water absorption and low moisture absorption.
Among the disadvantages of pultruded fiberglass, a pronounced anisotropy of properties can be noted as well as the high cost: profiles are more expensive than wooden or iron profiles of the same cross-section, but cheaper than aluminum.
Pultruded fiberglass is widely used in construction as load-bearing (slopes, hangars, frame structures, verandahs, balconies, conservatories) and non-load-bearing building structures (door and window profiles, door cladding and trim, suspended ceiling elements, cornices, gutters )). It can be used to make formwork and also as corrosion-resistant reinforcement for concrete. Pultruded fiberglass rods can be used as fasteners for hinged panels.
Other possible applications of pultruded glass fibers are related to their main advantages:
Constant cross-section and virtually unlimited length allow it to be used in road construction (barriers, fence posts, lamp posts, road marking posts, bridges);
Villa and cottage construction (flagpoles, pallets, decorative elements, railings, fences, decks, masts and windmills, elements of villa furniture, watering and sprinklers);
as recreational and everyday items (fishing rods, tent frame elements, folding furniture elements, stairs, ladders, support canes);
Chemical industry (fences, floors, corrosion-resistant plant elements);
In electrical engineering (elements of security systems, utility poles, tubular structures for laying cables and wires, microchannels).
